Kristen

Kristen

Kristen has always loved working with kids and has a passion for helping them reach their full potential in all areas of their lives. She believes in the power of building healthy relationships and creating a safe space for kids to learn and grow in. Kristen is currently a student at Brandon University, entering into her fourth year of the Integrated Education Program. She hopes to become an early years teacher and loves all the experience that she is getting through working with LitGroups.

Kristen started her time with LitGroups as a volunteer in January of 2017, came on staff that fall, and has been with us ever since! Her favourite part of LitGroups is seeing the kids grow and learn and being able to be a part of the “ah-ha!” moments that they have. She loves to laugh and have fun with the kids and you can often find her joking around with them.

When Kristen isn’t at work or school, she loves to be outside doing things like camping and hiking. She loves being with her friends and family and values living in community with others. Quite often you’ll find her cozied up with a good book and cup of coffee.

Roxanne

Roxanne

Roxanne discovered that children’s books are beautiful, fabulous, and poignant…all while trying to keep her extremely active first child from tearing her house apart. Skill-building, imagination-blossoming, relationship-building…who knew that reading together could be so great?! Since 2009, Roxanne and her husband Dwayne along with countless others have worked to provide some of what they ensured for their own kids – a safe, caring place where literacy is valued, encouraged and engaged in together, with individualized support all along the way…LITGROUPS: Linguistic Inspiration Together! Roxanne has a 2-year certificate from Winkler Bible Institute, a Bachelor of Music and Bachelor of Education (a gold medal recipient for Music Education program) from Brandon University, as well as a TESOL (Teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages) certificate from Assiniboine Community College. She is also a certified Coachnet International coach. She has taught for the Brandon School Division and Westman Immigrant Services, and has taught piano privately for 20 years. Roxanne has worked with at-risk youth as a drop-in staff, as well as with volunteers and new staff as a mentor and trainer with Westman Youth For Christ.
Becky

Becky

Becky was born into a family that treasured books. The love of reading was fostered in her from birth, to the extent that if she misbehaved the worst punishment her parents could inflict was to send her to her room and tell her she couldn’t read. To this day if she find a great children’s book she will bring it to family dinners and do a dramatic reading for the evening’s entertainment.

Becky’s mother is a teacher who not only encouraged her love of reading but also her love of helping others learn. Becky has tutored many people, from young saxophonists to first year biology students to adult EAL students. Her four years at LITGROUPS have taught her several things: She loves teaching, she loves working with kids and therefore she loves working for a program that makes a difference in kids’ lives.

Becky has a Bachelor of Arts in History, a TESOL certificate from ACC, and also teaches English to adult ESL students. She enjoys reading mysteries and classic literature, playing the piano and scouring the internet for her next DIY project.
